Steven Miller:

Introduction to Ontology Concepts and Terminology

Tutorial: 14:30–18:00 — Monday, 2 September 2013
DC-2013: International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications, Lisbon, Portugal

Abstract: This tutorial provides a beginning-level introduction to basic RDFS and OWL ontology concepts and terminology. It approaches ontology modeling within the context of the RDF data model and the Linked Data and Semantic Web visions, viewing RDFS and OWL ontologies as methods of providing machine-actionable structure to RDF triples. The tutorial focuses on the concepts of classes and subclasses, properties and subproperties, property domains and ranges, class inheritance, and various logical inferencing capabilities that can enable RDF instance data. It includes illustrative examples and an overview of OWL, with its greater potential inferencing power based on various property and class specifications.
